Deputy Minister mentioned “TRNC”, Greek opposition demanded resignation

1 Mins Read

Greece’s SYRIZA party demanded the resignation of Deputy Energy Minister Cafos due to using the term “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)” in a post from 5 years ago.

The use of the TRNC term in Greece caused discomfort within the opposition.

The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) requested the resignation of Deputy Energy Minister Nikos Cafos, who assumed office last week, citing his use of the term “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)” in a post from 2020. SYRIZA spokesperson Yorgos Karameros stated on Greek State Television ERT that Cafos used the TRNC term during his time as an economic analyst.

Karameros, who said “It is unacceptable to write TRNC and not apologize,” urged Cafos to resign immediately. On the other hand, Cafos, in a post on his X account, stated, “The opposition is attacking me due to a post I made in 2020, recognized my mistake, and deleted. I will not allow anyone to doubt my patriotism, loyalty to my homeland, and Cyprus.” Cafos was appointed as Deputy Energy Minister following a cabinet reshuffle in Greece on March 14th.
