Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed disapproval towards the visit to Greenland by a delegation led by Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President James David Vance. The Danish leader stated, “The US is exerting pressure on Greenland and Denmark that is unacceptable.”
A US delegation, including National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, visited Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish jurisdiction that President Donald Trump aimed to acquire for the US. The delegation was headed by Usha Vance, wife of Vice President James David Vance.
In response to the controversial visit, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated in an interview with Danish television, “The US is exerting unacceptable pressure on Greenland and Denmark. We will resist this pressure.”
Frederiksen rejected the idea of a special visit, saying, “You cannot have a private visit with representatives of another country.”
It was noted that the US delegation had not received any invitation from Greenland or Denmark.
VISIT TO BEGIN ON THURSDAY
Usha Vance, expected to travel to Greenland on Thursday with her delegation, will visit historical sites and gather information from officials during the visit ending on Saturday.
According to Vance’s office, Usha Vance will participate in a national sled dog race during her visit.
It is expected that Waltz and Wright will visit the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland and hold discussions with US officials.
REACTION TO THE VISIT
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen described the composition and timing of the US delegation’s visit as “problematic” and “disrespectful.”
Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede described the US delegation’s visit to the island as “extremely aggressive” and expressed displeasure at Waltz’s presence in the delegation.
Egede stated, “What is the National Security Advisor doing in Greenland? His sole purpose is to demonstrate power over us. His mere presence in Greenland will undoubtedly increase Americans’ belief in Trump’s mission and pressure.”
