REFERENDUM ON THE AGENDA
All parties in Greenland, an autonomous region under Denmark, agree on the independence of the island, but have different opinions on the speed of this process. Calls for independence have been on Greenland’s agenda for about a decade, and there is also the agenda to hold a referendum to gain independence from Denmark after the general elections. TRUMP’S SEIZURE PLAN
President Trump reiterated his statement on December 23, 2024, through his Truth Social account, that Greenland should be under the control of his country, emphasizing that owning and controlling the island is an “absolute necessity.” Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede rejected the possibility of Greenland becoming a U.S. state, stating that the country is “not for sale.” Trump, in his speech at the U.S. Congress on March 5, stated, “We need Greenland for national security and even international security. I think somehow, through some way, we will obtain it. We will obtain it and keep you safe.” Following this, Egede also said, “We do not want to be Americans or Danes, we are Greenlanders. Americans and their leaders need to understand this.”
