Severe rainfall in Spain has caused a devastating flood disaster in the Southern European country. Spain experienced its deadliest flood disaster since 1973. The number of fatalities in the flood disaster has now risen to 158. A national mourning of 3 days was declared due to the disaster, while experts warned of even worse disasters. Search operations continue for “many missing people” due to the increasing number of deaths and the forecast of new storms. The toll in the flood disaster hitting Spain continues to worsen. In addition to the increasing death toll in the disaster, it was reported that dozens of people are missing, especially in the Valencia region. City residents are calling for information about their missing loved ones through social media, television, and radio broadcasts. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the most affected areas on Thursday to announce this decision and declared Valencia as a “disaster area.” In the province of Castellon, a red alert was issued as up to 180 millimeters of rainfall was expected within 12 hours. More than a thousand soldiers specialized in rescue operations were deployed to Valencia for the disaster termed by Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles as an “unprecedented event.” Work is underway to identify bodies in some areas devastated by rainfall exceeding a year’s worth in just eight hours. They brought 50 mobile morgues to the region.
