The presidential election in South Korea is set to take place on June 3rd. According to a report from the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the date is expected to be approved tomorrow at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who is currently serving as acting president. Following the Constitutional Court’s impeachment ruling, the country is required to hold an early election for the presidency within 60 days. If the date is approved, candidates must apply by May 11th according to the election schedule, and campaigns will begin on May 12th. The new president will assume office after the election on June 3rd.

YOON’S MARTIAL LAW DECLARATION AND IMPEACHMENT PROCESS
Former President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on December 3, 2024, citing “anti-state activities by the opposition,” but was forced to retract this decision after a vote in the parliament revoked it and with approval from the Cabinet. Yoon, facing impeachment in a vote held by the National Assembly on December 14, 2024, was temporarily suspended from duty until the Constitutional Court issued a ruling. The Constitutional Court, in a decision on April 4th, accepted the National Assembly’s impeachment request, approving Yoon’s removal from office due to his declaration of martial law.
