NTT Communications, one of Japan’s leading telecommunications companies, announced that approximately 18,000 corporate customers had their data compromised following a cyber attack in February 2025.
According to the company, the attack was carried out through an internal system known as the “Service Order Information Distribution System”, which is used to manage service activations and changes.
SYSTEM ACCESS RESTRICTED NTT Communications detected the attack on February 5, 2025 and immediately restricted system access to take initial precautions. However, further investigations on February 15 revealed that a second device within the company’s internal network had also been compromised by the attackers. This device was promptly removed from the network. The company has not shared any information regarding the group behind the attack or the full nature of the breach.
MOBILE CONTRACTS UNAFFECTED The stolen data from the attack includes customer names, contract numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, and service usage information. Nonetheless, it was stated that individual consumer data or NTT Docomo’s corporate mobile contracts were not impacted by this breach. The company mentioned that there is no evidence of the stolen data being misused.
OPERATING IN OVER 70 COUNTRIES NTT Communications has an extensive service network worldwide. With physical locations in more than seventy countries, the company is a significant player in the field of information and communication technology, offering global cloud services, data centers, VPN services, and security solutions, among others.
ADDITIONAL MEASURES TAKEN Following the incident, NTT Communications announced that it had implemented additional measures to strengthen its security systems and enhance monitoring systems. Direct communication methods were used to inform customers, with a statement that no notifications would be sent via email, as a measure against potential phishing attacks.
INCREASED CYBER THREATS This event once again highlights how the telecommunications sector has become a target for cybercriminals and state-sponsored hacker groups. Telecommunication companies are attracting the attention of attackers not only due to customer data but also because of critical infrastructure services they provide. NTT Communications aims to implement a comprehensive security strategy to regain the trust of its customers in the aftermath of this incident.
