Turkey has signed a memorandum of understanding with the African country Niger regarding cooperation in mineral exploration and mining operations. The African country Niger, which has rich reserves in the mining sector, signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkey for cooperation in mineral exploration and mining operations. According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Minister Alparslan Bayraktar met with Niger’s Minister of Mines, Abarchi Ousmane, in Istanbul. Following the meeting, the “Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the Republic of Niger Ministry of Mines on Cooperation in the Mining Sector” was signed. Within the scope of the signed memorandum of understanding, information exchange, official level discussions, consultations between relevant ministries and institutions, and collaboration in mutual interest and capacity building projects will be encouraged while cooperation activities supporting sustainable development through the mining sectors of the two countries will be carried out. Additionally, Turkish public and private sector companies will be encouraged to operate in the mining sector in Niger, discussions will be held regarding the exploration and operation of mineral resources in certain regions, and information exchange will take place. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, whose opinions were included in the statement, stated that they aim to develop cooperation for public and private sector companies to operate in the mining sector in Niger and to explore and exploit mineral resources in certain regions with this agreement. Minister Bayraktar had meetings in the capital of Niger, Niamey, in July. Following meetings with Minister of Mines Ousmane, Minister of Petroleum Mahaman Moustapha Barké, and Minister of Energy Amadou Haoua, Bayraktar then signed the “Declaration of Intent for Cooperation in the Oil and Natural Gas Sector”.
