Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is worried about Turkey’s good relations with the new Syrian government. It has been reported that in today’s security meeting on Syria, he will address “Turkey’s growing dominance in Syria”.
According to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Netanyahu is set to meet security officials to discuss “Turkey’s increasing influence” in the country following the fall of the Baath regime in Syria on December 8, 2024. Also, the Kanal 12 TV channel in Israel reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu is closely monitoring the rapprochement between Turkey and the new Syrian government with concern. It was mentioned in the report that in tonight’s security meeting on Syria, Netanyahu will address “Turkey’s expanding dominance in Syria”.
ALLEGATION OF A TURKISH MILITARY BASE IN HOMS
Furthermore, the Walla news site reported that the Syrian government is in advanced discussions with Ankara to hand over a military base in the Tedmur (Palmyra) district of Homs province in exchange for economic, military, and political aid. The report stated that the presence of “Turkish military” in eastern Homs is causing serious concern for Israel. Previous security meetings highlighted the inevitable confrontation between Turkey and Israel in Syria. With the escalation of conflicts on November 27, 2024, and the collapse of the 61-year-old Baath regime on December 8, 2024, the Israeli attacks on Syria intensified. The Israeli army continued to destroy the remaining military infrastructure and capabilities of the regime forces, expanding its occupation of the Golan Heights, which belong to Syria.
