Combating Illegal Immigration in the European Union: Proposal for “Migration Hotspots”

1 Mins Read

Leaders of the European Union members Hungary, Slovakia, and Serbia gathered to discuss illegal migration. During the joint press conference, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban suggested that collective solutions could be found in safe havens for migrants in the last safe country they were in. Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico emphasized that tackling illegal migration within the European Union is a definite priority. Fico highlighted the presence of five million illegal migrants with entirely different backgrounds and cultural structures negatively affecting Europe’s conditions within the EU. Orban, on the other hand, proposed that hotspots in the last safe countries for migrants could provide a collective solution. He stated that only asylum-seekers whose requests have already been accepted should be allowed entry into the European Union. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic mentioned that Slovakia and Hungary did not want to establish migrant hotspots in Belgrade but offered assistance nonetheless.
