The interest of Chinese automotive giants in Turkey continues. Following BYD, Chery has also set its sights on investing in Turkey. It has been indicated that discussions with Chery are in the final stages. Chery’s President Guibing had met with President Erdogan over the weekend. A Turkish official stated that talks about Chery investing in Turkey have reached the final stages. The official, who preferred to remain anonymous, did not provide information to Reuters about the scale or the products Chery will manufacture through the investment to establish a car factory. Turkey, which is one of the leading vehicle manufacturers in Europe with a current production capacity of 2 million commercial and passenger vehicles, has been negotiating with Chinese car manufacturers seeking to establish production facilities abroad for some time. Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD had announced in July that it would establish a vehicle factory with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles in Turkey with a one billion dollar investment. Most recently, Chery International’s President Zhang Guibing had met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Industry Fatih Kacır over the weekend.
