Changes Coming to Driver’s Licenses in Europe

1 Mins Read

The European Union will transition to a standardized digital driver’s license by the end of 2030. The European Council of the European Union (EU) announced that an agreement has been reached between member states and the European Parliament (EP) on new rules regarding driver’s licenses. The statement noted that with the update of the driver’s license directive, minimum requirements for driver eligibility will change across EU countries, and rules regarding probationary periods for novice drivers will be harmonized. The announcement stated that as a result of the changes, rules and regulations pertaining to driver’s licenses will be more rational, comprehensive, and in line with the digital society. It also mentioned that by the end of 2030, there will be a standardized mobile license for all EU citizens, which will be integrated into the future European digital identity card. The digital license will be recognized in all EU member countries. The statement also mentioned that individuals can still obtain a physical driver’s license, which will have a validity period of 10 years if used as an identity card, while the validity period for driving a car and motorcycle will be 15 years.
