A forthcoming modification to the “blocking users” feature on social media platform X will allow individuals who have been blocked by a user to still see that user’s posts but not interact with them. An announcement made on X’s official account revealed that changes will be made to the blocking feature. According to the modification, individuals blocked by a user with a non-private profile will be able to view the user’s posts but will not be able to like or comment on them. The statement used the phrase “The blocking feature can be used by users to share harmful or private information about those they have blocked” and emphasized that this update will enhance transparency on the platform. Users who are concerned about who can see their posts are advised to “hide” their accounts. It is known that American billionaire Elon Musk, who acquired the platform in 2022, has criticized the “blocking feature” since that time. It has been noted in the media that X’s changes may lead to violations of the App Store and Google Play terms. Among the terms and conditions of these platforms is the requirement for social media applications to have the ability to filter out “harassment or bullying” for users. However, no statement has been issued by these platforms on the matter as of yet. In Twitter, now known as X, a similar feature was tested in 2013 where blocked users were still allowed to see and interact with others’ posts. Due to criticism, this feature was removed within hours.
