In Turkey, the total amount of transactions made with debit and credit cards during the January-September period reached 10 trillion 627.3 billion liras. The majority of spending occurred at supermarkets and shopping centers, with 29% of purchases being made online. According to the data compiled from the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT), the total amount of transactions made with bank and credit cards across Turkey reached 10 trillion 627.3 billion liras in the January-September period of 2024. When analyzing the sectoral distribution of payments made with bank and credit cards, the highest expenditure of 1 trillion 863.2 billion liras was in the category of supermarkets and shopping centers. Following that, the various food category ranked second with 742.4 billion liras, and it was followed by clothing and accessories with 739.9 billion liras. In the mentioned period, payments were made with bank and credit cards in the electric and electronic goods category amounting to 710.5 billion liras, while the service sector category saw payments of 695.4 billion liras. During this period, payments of 663.9 billion liras were made with bank and credit cards at gas stations, eating expenses totaled 629.7 billion liras, and other payments amounted to 555.2 billion liras. Insurance payments in the January-September period were 506.1 billion liras, public/tax payments were 462.6 billion liras, and payments for vehicle rental-sales, service, and spare parts reached 431.6 billion liras. Education, stationery, and office supplies saw payments of 307.1 billion liras during the same period, in addition to 409.9 billion liras paid for building materials, hardware, and ironmongery, and 375.3 billion liras in health, health products, and cosmetics. Furthermore, payments of 307.1 billion liras were made in education, stationery, and office supplies, while there were card payments of 246.1 billion liras at travel agencies and in transportation, 235 billion liras in airline transactions, and 151 billion liras in contractor works. The expenditures made with debit and credit cards were listed as follows: jewelry 174.6 billion liras, accommodation payments 173.7 billion liras, telecommunication payments 105.4 billion liras, individual retirement payments 51.3 billion liras, car rental payments 37 billion liras, club, association, and social service payments 34.6 billion liras, and direct marketing payments of 15.8 billion liras. 29% of Total Payments Made Online During this period, 3 trillion 91 billion liras of the shopping done with bank and credit cards was conducted online. The share of online spending in the total amount was calculated as 29%. Shopping done through mail and telephone in the first 9 months of the year totaled 504.5 billion liras, with customs duty payments amounting to 13.4 billion liras.
