2 Mins Read

The Canadian Foreign Minister Joly announced, “We are launching an advertising campaign in 12 different US states against the customs crisis.” Melanie Joly, the Canadian Foreign Minister, discussed the customs duties imposed by the US on Canada in an interview with CNN. Indicating that they applied customs duties worth 60 billion dollars in retaliation against American goods, Joly stated, “We are starting an advertising campaign in 12 different US states. Canadians are sending the message that no one wins in a trade war.” As part of this campaign, billboards with these ads will be placed on highways in states like Florida, Nevada, Georgia, and New Hampshire. The customs tension between the US and Canada began on March 4th with an additional 25% customs duty on products imported from Canada and Mexico. Trump later announced that they would not apply customs tariffs to products covered by the “US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)” until April 2nd. US President Donald Trump had also stated that additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports would come into effect on March 12th. Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, will impose an additional 25% charge on the electricity provided to US states in response to the US customs duties, as announced by Prime Minister Doug Ford on March 10th. Ford emphasized that he would not hesitate to increase this rate, stating, “If the US escalates this, I will not hesitate to completely cut off electricity. I feel very sorry for the American people because they are not the ones who initiated this trade war. There is only one person responsible, and that is President Trump.” The White House had warned Canada on March 12th that Ontario’s plans to cut off the electricity provided to the US entirely could have “serious consequences.”
