Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney announced that an early election will be held on April 28.
After Justin Trudeau resigned from his position, Mark Carney, the new Prime Minister of Canada, decided to hold an early election. Following his meeting with Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve the parliament in Ottawa, Carney held a press conference where he announced the decision to go for an early election on April 28 to strongly combat the threats from US President Donald Trump towards Canada.
Carney stated, “We are facing the biggest crisis of our lives due to President Trump’s unfair trade moves and threats to our sovereignty. Our response should be to build a strong economy and a safer Canada. Trump claims that Canada is not a real country. He wants to divide us so that the US can have control over us. We will not allow this.” While an election in Canada was not required until October 20, Carney hopes to capitalize on the significant recovery he has seen in polls since January. Carney, a 59-year-old former Governor of the Bank of Canada, lacks political experience, but was elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party in a party vote on March 10. He took office on March 15 after being sworn in.
