Farmers are demanding a comprehensive struggle against the brown marmorated stink bug. The President of TZOB, Şemsi Bayraktar, stated that “We don’t have much time left, we must accelerate the struggle during this period.” The President of the Turkish Farmers’ Association (TZOB), Şemsi Bayraktar, emphasized the need for the ongoing struggle against the brown marmorated stink bug to continue without slowing down, saying, “With the warming of the weather, this pest is spreading to agricultural areas. We don’t have much time left, we must accelerate the struggle during this period.” Bayraktar highlighted in his statement that the brown marmorated stink bug, which damages more than 300 agricultural products, especially hazelnuts, in the Black Sea and Marmara regions, harbors in abandoned buildings, barns, and warehouses during the winter months. Pointing out that the brown marmorated stink bug starts to spread from those areas to agricultural lands when the temperature rises, Bayraktar stressed the importance of continuous and complete struggle to prevent the spread of the pest. Bayraktar noted that effective measures for battling the brown marmorated stink bug include public health insect spraying and mechanical methods of eradication. He also mentioned some challenges encountered in collective struggle, such as the difficulty of controlling pests wintering outside of agricultural areas, some farmers living outside the region not participating in effective combat, the delayed start of producing natural enemies insects, the high cost of chemical pesticides used in combat, and geographical challenges in their application. He underscored the necessity of coordinated collective chemical combat conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, municipalities, and all related institutions under the coordination of the governorship to prevent the invasion of the brown marmorated stink bug from causing significant losses in hazelnut production. “WE MUST ACCELERATE THE STRUGGLE DURING THIS PERIOD” Within the scope of the “Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Action Plan” carried out with the Ministry and agricultural chambers, Bayraktar emphasized that efforts are made to prevent the spread of the infestation through farmer education, trap installation, production of natural enemies insects, and mechanical combat methods. He stated that it is crucial for authorized institutions and stakeholders to act collectively for the struggle to become more effective and comprehensive. Bayraktar pointed out the significant responsibility of municipalities and muhtars in implementing public health insect spraying and mechanical methods of eradication in homes, abandoned buildings, barns, and warehouses, noting, “With the warming of the weather, this pest is spreading to agricultural areas. We don’t have much time left, we must accelerate the struggle during this period. In order to protect all our plant products, especially hazelnuts, the comprehensive struggle against the brown marmorated stink bug must continue without slowing down.”
