Bukele indicated that the migrant ruled by the U.S. Supreme Court to be brought back from El Salvador, where he was deported, will not be returned.
U.S. President Donald Trump and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele met at the White House on Monday, April 14. Bukele also commented on Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to facilitate return to the U.S. Bukele stated in the Oval Office that there are no plans to send back Abrego Garcia, whom the Trump administration admitted was mistakenly sent to El Salvador, claiming that it would be like “letting a terrorist into the country.” U.S. officials also argued that despite the Supreme Court ruling, there is no obligation to bring Garcia back to the U.S.
BUKELE: HOW CAN I SMUGGLE A TERRORIST INTO THE U.S.?
With the assistance of Bukele, the Trump administration deported hundreds of people to El Salvador on claims of being gang members, and it was noted that the South American country received $6 million in return. The deportees were sent to El Salvador’s mega prison known as “hell on earth,” and it was understood that Garcia was mistakenly sent from the U.S. to El Salvador. The U.S. government described deporting Garcia, who previously lived in Maryland, as an “administrative error.”
A Department of Homeland Security official argued in an official document submitted to the court that there were no powers to forcibly bring back a foreigner detained in a foreign sovereign state.
In a statement to the press, Bukele claimed that he had no authority to bring Abrego Garcia back to the U.S., questioning, “How can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States?” The U.S. government accuses Garcia of being a member of the MS-13 gang, while his lawyer denies these claims and points out the lack of credible evidence to support the U.S.’s allegations.
TRUMP’S RESPONSE TO CNN; CNN’S REBUTTAL
During yesterday’s meeting, U.S. President Trump argued that those asking whether the mentioned migrant would be brought back to the U.S. were “sick people.”
According to The Independent, Trump frequently verbally harassed CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins during the Oval Office meeting. Trump claimed that CNN hates America when Collins pressed both leaders on Garcia’s situation, also alleging that the journalist herself is “low-level.”
In response to Trump, CNN’s Dana Bash stated, “We heard President Trump saying in the Oval Office that CNN hates our country. CNN does not hate our country.” During the press conference, Collins reminded Trump of the Supreme Court ruling, to which Trump replied, “Why don’t you just say, ‘Keeping criminals out of our country is a great thing’? Why cant you just say that? That’s why nobody’s watching you anymore.”
