The founder and former CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, Changpeng Zhao, has been released from prison after four months. Known as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance’s founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) was released from federal prison after four months. The US Federal Bureau of Prisons reported that Binance founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao was released from federal prison on September 27 due to violations of anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. Last November, CZ was found guilty of money laundering and terrorist financing allegations and was sentenced to prison. He also resigned from his position as CEO of Binance. In April, Binance’s founder agreed to return from Dubai to the US to serve his four-month sentence. A statement from Binance expressed happiness that CZ would be at home with his family. The statement indicated that although he is no longer managing or operating Binance, they are excited to see what he will do next. A lawsuit was filed against Binance and CZ in the US last November. As a result of the lawsuit, Binance paid a $4.3 billion fine for violating anti-money laundering laws. CZ also agreed to pay a $50 million fine, but it did not affect his personal wealth. CZ is estimated to have a net worth of around $60 billion, making him the wealthiest person in the US sentenced to prison. It is believed that CZ still holds approximately 90% of the majority shares in Binance.
