Celebrating Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, co-founder Bill Gates shared what he described as his “coolest” code yet.
Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, released the source code of Altair BASIC interpreter, the company’s first product developed for the Altair 8800 computer in 1975, to mark Microsoft’s 50th anniversary.
Sharing it on his personal website, Gates labeled this code as the “coolest” he has written so far.
The development of Altair BASIC began after Bill Gates and Paul Allen saw an article about the Altair 8800 computer in Popular Electronics magazine.
The two approached MITS, the manufacturer of Altair, with the idea of developing a BASIC interpreter for the computer.
Despite not having ready-made code, they managed to develop the software within a few weeks, making it Microsoft’s first product.
The published source code of Altair BASIC is available on Bill Gates’ website as a 157-page PDF document.
Previously, Microsoft had introduced an artificial intelligence tool called Copilot Search to enhance search results on the Bing search engine.
The company also added extension support for the mobile version of Edge browser for Android and introduced a productive artificial intelligence model to create gaming worlds.
