2 Mins Read

The intense rainfall and winds brought by Cyclone Alfred have hit the shores of Australia, leaving more than 300 thousand homes without electricity in the Queensland state. Repair teams are struggling to work in the harsh weather conditions, so tens of thousands of homes could remain without power for up to a week. This is noted to be the largest electricity loss due to a natural disaster in the region.

As the intense rainfall continues to strike Australia, emergency teams have urged residents to stay away from the flooding caused by Cyclone Alfred. According to AFP, more than 300 thousand homes were left without electricity in Queensland, with officials estimating that at least 750 thousand people have been affected by the power outages.

13 MILITARY PERSONNEL INJURED BY DEFENSE FORCES Officials mention that restoring power in some areas could take up to a week, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that 13 Australian Defense Force (ADF) personnel were “seriously injured” in the wild weather conditions. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli stated, “This is the largest electricity loss due to a natural disaster in Queensland’s history”. Heavy rain and strong winds reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour hit the Brisbane area on Saturday night.

EXPECTED TO CONTINUE UNTIL MONDAY Meteorologists expect rainfall of up to 700 millimeters and destructive winds to continue until Monday. Prime Minister Albanese stated that the situation in Queensland continues to be “very serious” and that severe rainfall and winds are expected in the coming days. More than a thousand homes are without power on the Gold Coast, while approximately 50 thousand people are in the dark in the city of Brisbane.
