Attention for Those Travelling to the Schengen Area! Passport Stamps are Disappearing, Electronic System is Coming

2 Mins Read

The Electronic Entry/Exit System (EES) implemented by the European Union (EU) countries to enhance border security and prevent illegal migration will come into effect starting from November 10, 2024. With the new system, entries and exits of individuals coming from non-EU countries to the Schengen area will be recorded in digital formats. Experts, however, warn against possible issues. So, what is the Electronic Entry/Exit System? What changes will the Electronic Entry/Exit System bring? Travel to EU countries will now be possible through an electronic system.
Implemented to enhance border security and prevent illegal migration, the system will come into effect as of November 10. Ylva Johansson, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, had announced that as of November 10, third-country nationals traveling to European countries for short stays will be subject to new rules. Even nationals from non-EU countries not requiring a visa will have their personal data collected digitally through the electronic entry and exit system. The new system will replace the manual stamping of passports of third-country nationals not citizens of the EU.
The system will collect individuals’ biometric data, including facial images and four fingerprint scans, upon entry and exit. The EES (Electronic Entry/Exit System) will be valid in the 27 countries of the Schengen area as well as Bulgaria and Romania. The implementation of EES for Turkish citizens traveling to Europe will necessitate the collection of biometric data at border crossings.
There will be no need to present any additional documents before travel, but the collection of biometric data during entry and exit procedures may lead to longer waiting times at the border. Migration policy experts regarding this new system stated, “The Electronic Entry/Exit System is a significant step to modernize European border management. Digital records can make border crossings faster and safer.
However, following the implementation of the system, effectively managing the process of collecting biometric data at border crossings will be of utmost importance.
Additionally, it is crucial to be prepared for potential issues such as long waiting times and technological glitches during border crossings.”
