Attempt to Avoid Taxes by Apple: 1.5 Million iPhones from India to the US

2 Mins Read

To avoid the new taxes announced by US President Donald Trump, Apple brought approximately 1.5 million iPhones from India to the US.

The US-based technology giant Apple increased its production in India to avoid the impact of the new taxes announced by US President Donald Trump, shipping nearly 1.5 million iPhones to the US.

After discussions with local authorities to reduce customs procedures at Chennai Airport in the Tamil Nadu state of India from 30 hours to 6 hours, Apple sent iPhones to the US last month with six cargo planes each with a capacity of 100 tons. It was reported that Apple aimed to build up inventory in the US market with this move. Apple, which produces the majority of its products in China, had warned of significant price increases in iPhones due to new taxes. Apple had previously agreed with Foxconn and Tata in India to shift production outside of China and had started production in three factories. Foxconn’s Chennai factory had produced 20 million iPhones last year. Apple sells more than 220 million iPhones worldwide annually. 20% of iPhone imports into the US come from India. With President Trump increasing the tax rate on imports from China from 54% to 125%, it is estimated that the price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, currently selling for $1599 in the US, will rise to $2300. President Trump had implemented a basic custom tariff of 10% for all countries on April 2 and specific reciprocal tax rates for some countries. Trump, who increased the tax rate for China from 54% to 125% yesterday, mentioned that over 75 countries had approached the US to resolve trade issues and announced a suspension on customs duties for 90 days.
