Armed Attacks in Nigeria: 52 People Killed

2 Mins Read

In Nigeria’s Plateau state, it has been determined that at least 52 people were killed in recent attacks in 6 villages, with nearly 2,000 people forcibly displaced.

In the northern Plateau state of Nigeria, armed attacks in recent days have resulted in the deaths of at least 52 people, with approximately 2,000 people displaced. The reason for the attacks in six villages in the Bokkos region of the state is still unclear, but it has been noted that this is the largest act of violence since December 2023, when more than 100 people were killed in the same region. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) stated that the extent of the violence became clear over the weekend, confirming the deaths of 52 people and the hospitalization of 22 others. In a statement issued on Sunday, NEMA indicated that “armed individuals carried out brutal attacks,” resulting in numerous casualties and property losses. The statement mentioned that “Over 1,820 people have been displaced. Three camps have been set up for the displaced individuals.”

STATEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENCY According to a statement from the office of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, instructions have been given to capture the perpetrators and “punish them severely.” Reports to the press indicate that most of the conflicts in the ethnically and religiously diverse Plateau state occur between Muslim herdsmen and Christian farmers, but factors such as climate change and the reduction of grazing lands due to the expansion of agricultural areas are also significant.
