Argentina’s Foreign Minister Diana Mondino, who voted “Yes” for the resolution at the United Nations General Assembly calling for the lifting of the US economic and trade embargo on Cuba, has been removed from office under the instructions of President Javier Milei. An announcement from the Argentine Presidency’s Spokesperson confirmed Mondino’s dismissal and the appointment of Gerardo Werthein as the new Foreign Minister. The statement emphasized that Argentina’s foreign policy is undergoing a “profound” change, stating, “Our country categorically opposes the dictatorship in Cuba and will continue to condemn any regime that violates human rights and individual freedoms.” Werthein, who also serves as Vice President of the International Olympic Committee, previously held the position of Argentina’s Ambassador to Washington. Argentina traditionally supported lifting the economic sanctions against Cuba at the UN General Assembly. According to local reports, the Milei government made this decision to align with the policies of the US and Israel and to better serve the country’s interests. WHAT HAPPENED? The UN General Assembly had passed the resolution calling for the removal of the US embargo on Cuba, with 187 votes in favor against 1 “abstention” and 2 “no” votes. The US and Israel voted “No,” while Moldova abstained. The resolution called for ending the US “economic, trade, and financial” embargo on Cuba.
