1 Mins Read

Following the death of a person as a result of a bear attack in Slovakia, the government has approved the shooting of 350 bears by 2025. The decision regarding the increasing attacks of brown bears was announced to the public by Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico. Slovakia, a Central European country, is home to a bear population in many mountainous regions. The number of bears in the country is estimated to range from one to three thousand. According to reports in the Slovakian media, a 59-year-old man was killed in the town of Detva last week while he was out for a walk and was attacked by a bear. Fico, during a live press conference broadcasted on Facebook today, stated, “We cannot live in a country where people are afraid to go into the forest and become prey for bears.” The Slovakian Ministry of Environment also mentioned in their statement that they will follow the example of Romania in this regard. Romania recently doubled the number of bears allowed to be killed to 481 within a year. In Slovakia, 144 bears were killed last year. According to government data in Slovakia, there were 13 recorded cases of bears attacking humans last year.
