The Chancellor of the University of Minnesota, Rebecca Cunningham, reported that a student was detained at a house off campus.
In the US, an unnamed student from the University of Minnesota was detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to The New York Times, Chancellor Cunningham stated in her remarks that the student was detained at a house off campus. Cunningham emphasized that the university had no prior knowledge of the detention incident and no information was shared with federal authorities before the incident occurred. The Chancellor did not disclose the name of the university student or the type of visa they held. On the other hand, university spokesperson Jake Ricker stated that the student was enrolled in the “Carlson School of Management.” ICE officials did not respond to requests for information on the matter.
“CAMPUSES SHOULD BE SAFE FOR ALL STUDENTS” Senator Doron Clark of Minnesota stated, “Our campuses should be safe places for all students, staff, and visitors. We must stand against the Trump administration’s senseless demonization of our friends, family, and neighbors.” The University of Minnesota was among the major universities that hosted support protests for Palestine in 2024. The Justice Department announced in February that the university was among 10 schools that inspectors would visit to determine if they were protecting Jewish students and faculty from illegal discrimination. The “Twin Cities” campus of the university, one of its 5 campuses, was also included in a list of 60 schools warned by the Department of Education this month about the risk of “potential enforcement actions” due to allegations of anti-Semitism.
