A report released by the Japanese government has revealed the destructive impact of a potential mega earthquake. According to the report, a magnitude 9 earthquake that could occur in the Nankai Trough could result in the death of 298 thousand people. Following the 2011 magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami that led to a nuclear disaster in Japan, a report prepared by the government for experts highlighted that another “mega earthquake” could cause even greater devastation. In the report published by the Japan Cabinet Office, it was reminded that a magnitude 9 earthquake could occur in the Nankai Trough extending along the Pacific Ocean coast, warning that this could lead to tsunami waves ranging from 10 to 30 meters in height. It was reported that in case the earthquake occurs in winter and during night hours, the death toll could reach 298 thousand people, with most fatalities expected to be due to the tsunami. Such a scenario could result in the collapse of over two million buildings, the evacuation of approximately 1.23 million people, which is equivalent to about 1% of the country’s population, and around two trillion economic losses. Japan, being one of the most seismically active countries in the world, is known to have about an 80% probability of a magnitude 8 to 9 earthquake occurring within the next 30 years in the Nankai Trough extending along the Pacific Ocean coasts. While concerns are raised about the potential extensive devastation of such a “mega earthquake,” experts mention that taking preventative measures could reduce loss of life and property.
