A New Study Suggests ChatGPT Can Increase Loneliness

1 Mins Read

A collaborative study revealed that active interaction with chatbots like ChatGPT can lead to increased feelings of loneliness and decreased socialization. Conducted jointly by OpenAI and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the study found that engaging with chatbots like ChatGPT may contribute to an increase in loneliness and reduced socialization. As part of the study, approximately one thousand participants interacted with ChatGPT for at least five minutes a day in written or audio form for a month. The results showed that users who tended to be emotionally connected and had high trust in the chatbot were more likely to report increased feelings of loneliness and dependence on ChatGPT. The study also revealed that only a small fraction of users used the chatbot for emotionally colored communication. OpenAI had previously called for a ban on the use of artificial intelligence models by China’s DeepSeek company in the United States. The company also introduced a neural network to generate artistic prose and is planning to add the Sora video creator to ChatGPT.
