A powerful product safety period is starting in online shopping tomorrow. Sellers will now share product information in detail. Inappropriate listings will be removed within 24 hours. Foreigners will be required to have a local representative. The Regulation on Market Surveillance and Inspection of Products Marketed through Remote Communication Tools, which will ensure transparency and product safety in online shopping, will come into effect tomorrow. The regulation, prepared by the Ministry of Trade and published in the Official Gazette on October 30, 2024, will enter into force tomorrow after a 5-month transition period. In a statement made by the Ministry, it was stated that the regulation aims to ensure transparency and product safety in online shopping while protecting the rights of consumers, bringing important innovations for both citizens and product-selling companies. PRODUCT INFORMATION WILL BE PRESENTED IN DETAIL The statement provided details about the regulation. According to the regulation, sellers will be required to present safety information about their products in a clear and understandable manner. Manufacturer or importer information, contact address, and product safety details will be included in the listings. This way, consumers will be able to access more information about the product before purchasing. This will allow citizens to examine the product as if they were in a physical store while shopping online. REMOVED FROM LISTINGS WITHIN 24 HOURS Virtual marketplaces will keep safety information about products in their systems. When inappropriate products are identified, the listings of these products will be removed within 24 hours. This will provide citizens with a compliant and safer shopping environment. These marketplaces will establish contact points where citizens can inquire about product safety. Complaints, notifications, and information requests related to product safety can be submitted through these points. REQUIREMENT FOR FOREIGN SELLERS TO HAVE REPRESENTATIVES Changes will be made regarding companies selling products from abroad. Companies sending products from abroad will be required to appoint a local representative in Turkey. Companies that do not meet this requirement will not be able to sell to Turkey. Sanctions will be imposed on those who do not comply with the regulations, and access to inappropriate content will be restricted.
