Severe rainfall, particularly affecting the eastern and southern regions of Spain, has led to the loss of 51 lives. Carlos Mazon, president of the Valencian regional government, announced that the largest disaster since 1996 has occurred.

Spain has fallen victim to floods brought by heavy rainfall.

Carlos Mazon, president of the Valencian regional government in the east of the country, stated that there have been fatalities due to floods and water inundations in some municipalities.

Mazon, expressing that lifeless bodies have been found in some accessible points and others are still being discovered, stated that out of respect for families, further details will not be provided. He announced that the region is experiencing the greatest disaster caused by severe rainfall since 1996. The Spanish press reported that one person is missing in Valencia and six in the city of Albacete due to floods and water inundations.

Later, it was reported that 51 people lost their lives. It was shared that unfavorable weather conditions in the east and south regions, with more than 200 liters of rainfall per square meter, caused extensive damage, leaving agricultural areas submerged, hundreds of vehicles damaged, trees uprooted, and roads and bridges collapsed, leading to significant disruptions in road and rail transportation. The Spanish government announced the formation of a crisis committee due to the loss of life and property caused by adverse weather conditions. Travel Warning from Prime Minister SANCHEZ

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez took to social media to express, “I am closely and anxiously monitoring the information regarding missing individuals and the damage caused by severe rainfall and storm in the past few hours. All emergency services, civil protection, military emergency response teams, police, and civil guards are on duty in the region. Let’s be very cautious in the face of the storm and avoid unnecessary travels.” In a statement from the Royal Palace, the following was noted: “We are closely following the destructive effects of heavy rain and storm in Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, Andalusia, and other regions of Spain with great concern. Our most heartfelt wish is for our missing citizens to be found and rescued as soon as possible. We stand in solidarity with thousands of our people affected by this disaster. We thank all emergency services, firefighters, local police, armed forces, national police, and civil guards for their commendable efforts under such difficult conditions.”
