New Delhi on alert: Air pollution reaches peak

2 Mins Read

The quality of air in New Delhi, the capital of India, was reported to have exceeded the limit recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) 25-30 times last week. It was noted that various regions of India experience severe air pollution between October and January each year.

The air quality in New Delhi has deteriorated to extremely poor levels in the past few days.

While extreme air pollution is experienced in many cities in Northern India between October and January each year, the pollution affecting the cities leads to the closure of businesses, the suspension of classes in schools, and disruptions in transportation.

EXCEEDED LIMIT 25-30 TIMES

It was reported last week that the air pollution levels in various parts of New Delhi exceeded the limit recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) 25-30 times.

Experts warned that during the Diwali festival on Thursday, the city’s air quality would worsen in the coming days due to the use of fireworks and the burning of crop residues in neighboring states.

Additionally, experts advising the people of New Delhi not to leave their homes urged them to use public transportation instead of their own vehicles.

AIR QUALITY: VERY POOR

According to government data, the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) per cubic meter, which can cause various illnesses deep in the lungs, was recorded to reach up to 350 micrograms per cubic meter in some areas today.

When PM 2.5 levels reach 300 to 400, the air quality is classified as very poor, and when it reaches 400-500, it is termed severe.

The government of New Delhi prohibits the production, storage, sale, and use of fireworks during the Diwali festival each year due to the air quality reaching its worst levels at certain times.
