Iranian President Raisi: US Using Dollar as a Weapon

2 Mins Read

The President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, stated that the US is using the dollar as a weapon, while emphasizing that BRICS has the facilities to facilitate the use of national currencies. According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, Raisi spoke at the narrow-scope meeting of the 16th BRICS Leaders Summit in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan in the Russian Federation. Raisi expressed, “The US uses the dollar as a weapon to control other countries. The world sees BRICS as an organization that will weaken the power of the dollar and promote the use of national currencies. The major producer and consumer of energy, food, and other goods, as well as having significant transportation and transit routes, make it easier for BRICS member countries to use national currencies.” Raisi called for speeding up the economic and trade cooperation among BRICS member countries by directing their relevant institutions, and underlined the need to establish joint mechanisms against economic sanctions. He pointed out the necessity of sharing experiences and knowledge, reaching new technologies through joint investments, and emphasized the importance of strengthening the New Development Bank (NDB) established within BRICS, accepting new members and increasing capital to support infrastructure projects. With the inclusion of Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this year, the number of BRICS members has increased to 9, comprising leading emerging economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. BRICS has been more in the spotlight in recent years due to Western countries imposing sanctions on Russia following the Ukraine War.
