Born in a refugee camp in Khan Yunis during the period when the Gaza Strip was under Egyptian administration in 1962, Yahya Sinwar spent his early years there. His family sought refuge in the Gaza Strip after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War following the Al-Majdal Asqalan (Ashkelon) incident. After graduating from the Khan Yunis Boys’ School, he continued his education at the Islamic University of Gaza, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Arabic Studies. Yahya Sinwar was first arrested in 1982 and spent several months in the Fara Prison. In 1988, Sinwar was accused of involvement in the kidnapping and killing of two Israeli soldiers and the suspected collaboration with Israel, resulting in the killing of four Palestinians. He was detained in February of that year. Sinwar served 22 years of his sentence and in 2011, as part of an exchange for IDF soldier Gilad Shalit who had been held captive by Hamas for five years, he was released among 1,026 individuals, being the most senior Palestinian prisoner. In a Hamas election held in March 2021, he was re-elected as the head of the Gaza branch for a second consecutive four-year term. Besides being the highest-ranking Hamas official in Gaza, he was considered the second most powerful member of Hamas after Haniyeh.
