Symbolically, the first chestnuts of the season in Aydın were purchased for 500 lira per kilogram. Ten producers participated with 200 kilograms of chestnuts in the purchasing ceremony held at the Aydın Commodity Exchange. The products were bought representatively for 500 lira per kilogram by the Exchange. Aydın Governor Yakup Canbolat emphasized that chestnuts are one of the city’s 4 products with a registered geographical indication in the EU, adding that Aydın ranks first in the country with 22,715 tons of chestnut production. Canbolat pointed out that chestnuts cater both to the domestic and international markets, stating, “Chestnut is a source of income for our farmers and a high-value product for our country. Disease and pest control are critical for maintaining our province’s position in production.” Aydın Commodity Exchange President Fevzi Çondur also mentioned that chestnuts grown in the city are marketed to many countries.
