Record Electric Vehicle Sales Worldwide

2 Mins Read

The number of electric vehicles sold worldwide in September reached a record of 1.7 million. According to data released by the UK-based research firm Rho Motion, 1.7 million electric vehicles were sold globally in September. This figure surpassed the sales volume seen in December 2023, which was the previous record, by more than 150,000, setting a new global record for electric vehicle sales in September. Of these sales, 1.1 million took place in China, while over 300,000 electric vehicles were sold in the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom last month. From January to September, total electric vehicle sales worldwide reached 11.5 million, an increase of 22 percent. Of these total sales during this period, 7.2 million were in China, 2.2 million in the EU and the UK, and 1.3 million in the US and Canada. The remaining sales were made in other regions around the world. Charles Lester, Rho Motion’s Data Manager, stated in his assessment of the data that the record-breaking electric vehicle sales in September brought new hope to the sector. Highlighting the inevitability of electrification in the transportation sector, Lester said, “Doubts were raised recently due to sales slowdowns in many parts of the world, which now seem to be behind us. However, regional differences are surprising. China accounts for more than half of the global total alone, while Europe’s numbers are decreasing, and the US and Canada are growing steadily.”
