The Israeli army, whose billion-dollar air defense was breached by a Hezbollah drone, is experiencing a major shock. The question on everyone’s mind is how Hezbollah achieved what Iran couldn’t with hypersonic missiles, using a 20-year-old drone. The Israeli Army is in shock over the drone attack that struck the Golani military base in the country’s north. An Israeli army spokesperson announced that they were unsure why the air defense systems did not activate before the attack by Hezbollah and that they are investigating the situation. Israel’s air defense system consists of three layers. Long-range missiles are intercepted by Israel’s Arrow 2 and 3 systems, with a range exceeding 2,000 kilometers. The U.S.-Israel jointly produced “David’s Sling” system provides protection in a 300-kilometer area, while the well-known “Iron Dome” system has a shorter range of 70 kilometers. The effectiveness of Iron Dome’s protection is stated to be 90%, with its Tamir missiles capable of reaching twice the speed of sound. However, to intercept incoming missiles and drones, they must first be detected. It is also possible to overload the system by using a sufficient number of missiles and drones to overcome it. It was reported that before the Hezbollah attack, many rockets were fired towards the Golan Heights, thus distracting Israeli defense systems. Simultaneously with this attack, multiple unmanned aerial vehicles were sent towards Israel. While Israel destroyed a kamikaze drone coming from the sea, it is mentioned that the unmanned aerial vehicle that struck the military base flew at low altitudes, avoiding detection. The Israeli media reported that a Mirsad 1 drone was used in the attack. The remotely controlled drone, which Hezbollah has been using for over 20 years, can carry approximately 50 kilograms of explosives. The 3-meter unmanned aerial vehicle is said to reach speeds of up to 370 kilometers per hour. Military experts highlight that when combined with rocket and mortar attacks, low-flying drones can bypass Israel’s air defense systems.
