The winner of the parliamentary elections held in Lithuania yesterday has been announced. According to unofficial initial results, Lithuania’s Social Democratic Party (LSDP) won the first round with a 19.36% vote share. A coalition government formed by left-wing parties is expected to be established in the country, with the second round of elections scheduled for October 27th.Lithuania’s main opposition party, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), won the first round of parliamentary elections held yesterday. According to unofficial results, LSDP received 19.36%, and the ruling Homeland Union-Christian Democrats Party (TS-LKD) received 17.96% of the votes. The third place was secured by the Dawn of Nemunas party with 15.99%, ensuring that a total of 6 parties will enter the parliament.LDSP leader Vilija Blinkeviciute stated in a press conference that they will form a coalition government with the Union of Democrats for Lithuania and the Union of Farmers and Greens of Lithuania. She mentioned that there will be no change in the country’s foreign policy, emphasizing that assistance to Ukraine will remain the top priority. Blinkeviciute also noted, “However, Lithuanians are seeking changes in domestic policies such as wages, housing issues, healthcare, and the education system.”It was announced that the voter turnout for the first round of elections, where more than 1,700 candidates competed for the 141-seat parliament, was 52.6%. In a country with a total of 2.4 million voters, the second round of elections will take place on Sunday, October 27th. With a population of approximately 3 million, half of Lithuania’s parliament is elected through a popular vote, with a 5% threshold. The remaining seats in the parliament are filled by regional candidates. If no candidate obtains more than 50% of the votes in their region, the two candidates with the highest votes proceed to the second round.
