WHAT IS THE NOBEL PRIZE?
Established on June 9, 1900, following the will of the Swedish Alfred Nobel, the awards given by the Nobel Foundation to those who serve humanity are considered the most prestigious awards in the world. The Nobel Prizes are awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Academy, the Karolinska Institute, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, peace, and medicine. In addition, the Nobel Prize in Economics was established in 1968, following the decision of the Swedish Central Bank to award a prize in economics in memory of Alfred Nobel, and was first awarded in 1969. The Nobel Prizes are presented to the recipients at a ceremony held on December 10th, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. However, there have been several years since the start of the awards in 1901 when they were not awarded, with most cancellations occurring during the First and Second World Wars. The award ceremonies could not be held in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
