Greece raised the international ship port security service fee from 0.5 cents to 5 euros. Agents who reacted to this decision decided not to operate trips from Cesme to Chios Island this weekend. Due to the strike, Cesme Port remained empty today. If no agreement is reached at the meeting expected to take place on Wednesday among stakeholders, it is anticipated that trips will not be conducted next weekend as well. Greece raised the international ship port security service payment from 0.50 cents to 5 euros per person. According to the decision made on June 10, it was announced that previously sold tickets would not be affected by the increase. However, due to the visa-on-arrival system, ferry tickets to the popular Chios Island were sold days before. When Chios Island Municipality demanded a 5 euro service fee for tickets sold in July and August, businesses reacted. Companies decided to mutually stop their services on October 12-13. As a result of this decision, Cesme Port, usually busy on weekends, appeared empty today. Nezihe Ertürk, an authorized representative of one of the agents halting services, stated, “Chios Island Municipality informed us on June 10 that they would raise the tax from 0.50 cents to 5 euros. However, we had already sold tickets for June, July, and August.” Ertürk explained that they informed Chios Island Municipality that they could not pay the 5 euro fee retroactively. Ertürk said, “They said they would come up with a solution for this. But they insisted that we pay the fee. We expressed that since this is now well above our costs, we cannot pay. Negotiations have been ongoing, but there is still no resolution.” Ertürk reported that three companies on the Turkish side and one on the Greek side had stopped their services, adding, “Discussions are ongoing. We have a meeting on Wednesday, but if we cannot reach a solution, it will continue next weekend.”
