Peace talks between the Colombian government and former members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) that had previously stalled have resumed. A peace delegation from the government met with representatives from FARC’s umbrella group, the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), in the capital Bogota for the sixth round of discussions. According to reports in the national press, the parties will address the extension of the bilateral ceasefire, scheduled to end on October 15th, and environmental issues. Due to divisions and disagreements within the EMC, negotiations are being conducted with the Jorge Suarez Briceno, Magdalena Medio, and Raul Reyes factions. Andrey Avendano, a representative of the EMC delegation, acknowledged the challenging process, stating, “We hope to reach a new agreement, we have faced numerous obstacles for a long time, and have made progress with ups and downs. We are eagerly awaiting the outcomes of these talks.” Meanwhile, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Susana Muhamad, highlighted the need to expedite the peace negotiations. The High Commissioner for Peace, Otty Patino, expressed optimism about extending the ceasefire and acknowledged the difficulties they are facing.
