The European Union to Impose New Sanctions on Russia

The European Union (EU) has announced that new sanctions will be imposed on Russia for its “destabilizing activities” targeting the Union and its member states. The purpose of the sanctions is to address various threats such as “undermining elections and institutions, threats to economic activities, malicious cyber activities, and weaponization of migrants.”

The European Union (EU) has revealed that new sanctions will be implemented on Russia.

In a written statement from the EU Council, it was mentioned that the new sanctions will target individuals and entities involved in actions and policies by the Russian government that weaken the core values, security, independence, integrity of the EU and its member states, as well as international organizations and third countries. The statement highlighted that the aim of the sanctions is to combat various hybrid threats such as “undermining election processes and the functioning of democratic institutions, threats and sabotage to economic activities, malicious cyber activities, and the weaponization of migrants.” Information regarding which individuals and entities will be included in the sanctions was not shared.

“EU’s Response to Russia’s Activities” The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in his statement about the decision, mentioned, “Today’s decision is part of the EU’s response to the increasing activities of Russia with new operations on European soil.” Borrell emphasized, “There is a cost to destabilizing actions towards the EU, its member states, and partners. Russia will not succeed in undermining our resilience and stability.” The EU’s sanctions include freezing the assets of listed individuals and entities in the 27 member countries, a ban on providing them with economic resources directly or indirectly, and a travel ban to the EU for the individuals listed.
