Red Card for Athletes Paying Low Taxes according to the Ministry of Treasury

3 Mins Read

The Ministry of Treasury has focused on athletes who earn high incomes but pay low taxes. In this context, the income of 1,900 athletes in different branches was examined. Approximately 5 billion liras of unrecorded income were discovered in the past 3 years. Athletes who evade taxes will be called to explain. The Ministry of Treasury continues to closely monitor athletes who earn high incomes but do not declare them, examining the salaries of 1,900 individuals in various sports fields, uncovering about 5 billion liras of unrecorded income in the last 3 years. According to information obtained from the ministry, the Revenue Administration continues its audits related to various sectors and professions as part of the fight against the underground economy. The administration has initiated a study on high-value athlete salaries that are left undeclared. The Revenue Administration, checking whether athletes have declared their high salaries, found that some payments made by clubs to professional players in football, basketball, and volleyball between 2021, 2022, and 2023 were not reported. Under the Income Tax Law, clubs deduct taxes from the salaries they pay to athletes. If the income earned by athletes exceeds the fourth threshold of the income tax tariff, those in this profession are required to file a declaration and pay tax calculated at an increased rate. In the conducted study, 1,900 athletes were analyzed. Revenue Administration data, club declarations, contract information, news reported in national and international media, and transfer information submitted by clubs to the Public Disclosure Platform were subjected to cross-checks. The study revealed significant tax losses in income generated between 2021-2023. Among them, it was determined that 400 athletes with million-dollar contracts left about 5 billion liras of salary income undeclared in the last 3 years, and 100 athletes did not report their income despite filing a declaration. ATHLETES WILL BE CALLED FOR EXPLANATION Finance and Treasury Minister Mehmet Şimşek also stated that the Revenue Administration will invite the mentioned athletes for an explanation and ask them to declare their undeclared earnings. Şimşek said, “For athletes who fail to fulfill the necessary obligations within the scope of the explanation invitation, the unpaid taxes will be requested with penal charges.” Emphasizing that audits for combating the underground economy continue within the framework of fairness and efficiency in taxation, Şimşek stated, “As the Treasury, we will continue to knock on the doors of ‘those who earn a lot but declare a low income.’ Our audit activities targeting those who earn high incomes and conceal them will continue. We will do whatever it takes to collect taxes from those in the underground economy.”
