1 Mins Read

In the eastern province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 78 people lost their lives when a boat with 278 passengers capsized in Lake Kivu. According to reports in the local media based on official sources, the boat, which departed from the Kituku port in Goma, the capital of North Kivu, with 278 passengers, capsized. As a result of the boat capsizing in Lake Kivu, 78 people lost their lives. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for the boat that carried more passengers and cargo than its capacity, and an investigation into the incident has been launched. Due to the lack of sufficient asphalt roads in the country, rivers and lakes are commonly used for transportation. Particularly during periods of heavy seasonal rainfall, accidents like this occur due to the negligence of maintaining the boats as well as carrying more cargo and passengers than their capacity. In a boat accident in June 2024 in the DRC’s capital Kinshasa, 80 people lost their lives.
