According to the research findings, couples with low-budget weddings have lower divorce rates compared to those with high-budget weddings. Experts indicated that they believe wedding expenses and incurred debts form the basis of arguments among couples in the future stages of marriage. Researchers and companies studying married couples in the USA revealed that couples with low-budget weddings have lower divorce rates than those with high-budget weddings. The study showed that couples overspending on weddings start facing difficulties due to debts they cannot afford, leading to potential divorce.

The research found that among every 10 couples who spent over $25,000 on a wedding, one couple divorced within 3 years, with an average divorce rate of 1 in every 20 couples over a 3-year period. Harry Benson, the director of the UK-based Marriage Foundation, stated, “These data show that expensive weddings in the USA have negative effects on marriage, leading to indebtedness.” He emphasized that weddings do not need to be expensive, pointing out that the research demonstrates big spending is not necessary to celebrate couples’ special days.
