In Singapore, former Transport Minister S. Iswaran has been sentenced to one year in prison for obstructing justice and accepting illegal gifts worth at least $300,000.

The 62-year-old former Transport Minister S. Iswaran faced charges in court in Singapore.

The Court ruled that Iswaran would serve a 12-month prison sentence for obstructing justice and accepting illegal gifts worth at least $300,000.

In his statement, High Court Judge Vincent Hoong stated, “Trust in public institutions is fundamental to effective governance. This trust can easily be shattered when a public servant falls below the standards of honesty and accountability.”

CONNECTED TO 35 CORRUPTION CHARGES According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Iswaran repaid approximately $295,000 in financial gains to the government and the gifts he received were confiscated. Last week, S. Iswaran, found guilty, faced 35 charges related to corruption.

It was alleged that Iswaran received gifts such as private jet travel from senior executives and businessmen, tickets to sporting events, bicycles, whiskey, and golf clubs.

Iswaran resigned in January after being formally informed of the charges against him.

Singapore, known for having one of the lowest rates of corruption, last saw former Environment Minister Wee Toon Boon sentenced for bribery exceeding $600,000 in 1975, becoming the latest high-ranking politician to be convicted of bribery.
