In September, inflation in Istanbul rose by 3.9 percent. The impact of schools reopening was evident in inflation. Significant increases were observed in products related to the education group in September. The product with the highest price increase was pencils, with an increase of 93 percent. Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO) announced the exchange rates of products with the highest and lowest retail price increases in September. According to İTO’s Istanbul Cost of Living Index, out of 242 products, the retail prices of 129 increased, prices of 18 products decreased, and prices of 95 products remained unchanged. Pencils, included in the culture, education, and entertainment expenditures group, showed the highest percentage increase in price at 92.94 percent in September. Among other products experiencing price increases, some were tuition and private lesson fees in the culture, education, and entertainment expenditures group at 79.85 percent, notebooks at 66.22 percent, school clothing at 65.33 percent, fresh beans in the food expenditures dried vegetables and fruits sub-group at 46.68 percent, chili peppers in the same group at 39.64 percent, zucchini at 34.55 percent, and school bags in the culture, education, and entertainment expenditures group at 30.94 percent. In September, the price of lemons in the food expenditures dried vegetables and fruits sub-group decreased by 46.58 percent. Thus, lemons became the product with the highest price decrease. Other products with declining prices included plums at 14.06 percent, melons at 11.83 percent, pears at 7.11 percent, fuel-oil at 6.94 percent in the housing expenditures group, gas oil at 3.86 percent, and bedroom furniture at 3.03 percent.
