2 Mins Read

Reports indicate that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited disaster areas to oversee the ongoing efforts to rebuild regions affected by the floods that occurred in the country’s northwest in July. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Jong-un visited areas in the northwest of North Korea that were impacted by the severe rainfall-induced floods. During his inspection of the ongoing work in areas damaged by the floods, Kim emphasized the urgent need to ease the suffering of those affected by the disaster. Kim stated, “It is currently the party’s and government’s most urgent task to alleviate the suffering of flood victims and to restore production and living conditions to normal levels in the areas affected by the flood.” In July, in the city of Sinuiju in northwest North Korea, more than 5,000 people were evacuated after severe rainfall caused the Yalu River on the North Korea-China border to overflow in the region. The South Korean Ministry of Unification had estimated that the number of people who died or went missing as a result of the severe rainfall and flooding in North Korea had exceeded 1,000. Kim Jong-un had condemned South Korean media for fabricating news about the extent of the damage caused by the flood disaster in his country.
