Scientists have issued a warning about deceptive mushroom images created by Google’s artificial intelligence, alerting to deadly risks. Experts noted that images generated by AI in the search engine do not reflect reality and can lead to dangerous errors. Professor David Hawksworth from the University of Southampton emphasized that the situation could be potentially dangerous when correct identification is not made. Furthermore, experts cautioned that relying on AI-supported sources for amateur collectors could be risky, underscoring the importance of distinguishing between safe mushroom species and toxic ones. Scientists have alerted to the danger of artificially generated mushroom images ranking highly on Google. Following misleading results about mushrooms from the search engine, experts stressed that collectors should avoid using Google Images to identify mushrooms. Despite images for consumed mushrooms being labeled as generated by AI, highly inaccurate mushroom images often appear at the top. Specialists in mycology from the University of Southampton warned that this situation could lead to dangerous, even deadly errors for collectors trying to identify safe mushrooms. Professor David Hawksworth stated, “This is potentially extremely dangerous.” Nonetheless, experts mentioned that even if you think you can distinguish a safe species from a dangerous one, routinely picking and eating mushrooms found on the ground is not safe.
