Penguins International, a non-profit organization, is organizing a protest march to capitalize on the unexpected interest sparked by Trump’s customs duties. The march aims to raise awareness about the endangered status of penguin species.
Although US President Donald Trump’s customs duties have been suspended for 90 days, economic turmoil continues and the penguins are not happy about it. When Trump announced the customs duties, a 10% tariff was imposed on the Heard and McDonald Islands belonging to Australia, where only penguins and seals reside without human inhabitants. In response to this decision, a social media account was created and a digital resistance was initiated with the hashtag #PenguinsAgainstTrump. However, the penguins are not intending to stop there. These determined birds, unwilling to ‘wing it’ against Trump, are moving on to the next stage of resistance. According to a statement from a non-profit organization, on Wednesday, April 16, a symbolic “protest march” will be held on the islands. Penguins International will live stream the annual migration of Antarctic penguins from the ocean to their breeding grounds, naming the event ‘Penguins’ Protest March’ in reference to Luc Jacquet’s striking 2005 French documentary.
David Shutt, the executive director of the non-profit organization, said: “The wild penguins on Heard and McDonald Islands face much greater threats than the imposed customs duties. Today, nine out of the existing 18 penguin species are listed as either vulnerable or endangered.” “The unexpected interest in Antarctic penguins presents an opportunity that we can use to draw attention to penguin species as a whole. We are grateful for taking this opportunity to take a step towards protecting them for the good of our planet.” The protest march will be live-streamed on the non-profit organization’s YouTube channel on Wednesday, April 16. Additionally, World Penguin Day will be celebrated on April 25.
