President Donald Trump suggested that Iran is deliberately delaying a potential nuclear agreement with the United States and warned that a military intervention against Iran’s nuclear facilities could be on the table.
Following a meeting between the US special envoy Steve Witkoff and a senior Iranian official in Oman on Saturday, President Donald Trump told reporters, “It seems like they are stalling us.” Describing the Saturday talks as “positive” and “constructive,” both Iran and the US, Trump emphasized that “Iran must completely abandon the concept of nuclear weapons. They cannot be allowed to possess nuclear arms.” When asked about the possibility of a military strike on nuclear facilities in Tehran as a response, Trump replied, “Certainly.” Trump also claimed that Iran is “very close” to developing nuclear weapons and warned that they could face a harsh response if they do not act swiftly.
The US and Iran had engaged in indirect talks during the previous administration of President Joe Biden, but significant progress was not made. The most recent direct talks between the US and Iran governments occurred during the international nuclear agreement reached under former President Barack Obama’s leadership in 2015, from which Trump later withdrew.
